Not Going To Take It Anymore

Insurance Corner

by Sue Haley

“I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” those words were made famous by Peter Finch as anchorman Howard Beale in the movie “Network”. But they could just as easily apply to what is going on with laws about vehicle liability insurance.

Here’s an observation made by a few of my clients…see what you think.

Good citizen John Doe buys liability insurance because it is required by law. That protects everyone John Doe hurts and their property. John also buys Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist to protect himself in case the person who hits him either doesn’t have insurance, or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover the damages that he sustains from the accident.

Now here comes the rub. What happens to the guy who doesn’t have insurance and hits John Doe? Very little. He pays the ticket for no insurance. That’s a small price to pay in comparison to the premiums he would be paying to stay legal.

There are a lot of us “John Does” out here paying the premiums for 30% of the Texas residents who opted to let their insurance go after they got the proof of insurance card they needed to register their car.

It sure makes my blood boil!.

Why doesn’t the State come up with a plan that would require insurance companies to notify the State when a policy is canceled? The State could then revoke the driver’s license. Sound too easy to me. Personally, I wouldn’t leave home without Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage.

The fact remains that 30% of Texas drivers DON’T carry insurance. Get mad. Let someone know you’re tired of paying someone else’s bills.

Write your congressmen and your state representatives – you can easily find contact information on all of them at www.Congress.org. Tell them “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore! and I am willing to support candidates who will address this issue.”
